It occurs to me that I could simply play no other black creatures in the deck and instead only play green creatures and take advantage of the life drain shenanigans from Witherbloom and other sets

The closest paper comparison is something like Obsidian Fireheart, which uses a specific kind of counter to 'remind' you about the effect even if the creature dies

The only gripe I have is that party decks are usually creature-centric, so you arent gonna combo off with this card

a cheap threat that draws plenty of cards does wonders, even if it means you need to restrict your mana curve

You can also use Misthollow Griffin to scry through your deck, two cards at a time, until you find some missing combo piece you might need to secure the game
